I have several birthdays and events coming up to cook for. Yesterday my friend and I went shopping for groceries at Valli International Market, which is one of my favorite places to shop. That place is like crack. I just want to wander up and down the aisles and look at foreign packaging and buy foods from Bulgaria and Pakistan and Korea and look at things like cacti leaves and ask people buying them what in the world they are making.
In the midst of my shopping trip, I went to the dairy section to buy some butter for cookies. A store worker pointed the case out to me. I looked over my shoulder at the butter case and there was a giant display of this:

I wish I had taken a picture of the display for a blog post, but I didn't think of it at the time.
I felt like I'd been struck by lightning. I started cracking up, right there in the grocery store. People thought I was crazy, I'm sure, some sweaty (it's really hot right now) middle aged woman in yoga pants and Sketchers standing in the dairy aisle just laughing like a loon for no apparent reason.
There were tubs and tubs, all different kinds. Who knew there were so many varieties of "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter"? I wanted to buy one of each kind! And then I saw the generic versions and I laughed even harder. (If you know why this was so funny to me, I salute you! The post title is a clue.) Oh I wanted to buy them, so so badly. Just so every time I open the refrigerator, I can laugh and laugh.
I finally just picked up one of the regular tubs and put it into my cart. Then I had another moment of grace, because I was shopping with a friend, not by myself. I went zooming over the store, looking for my friend. She was rifling through her coupons when I found her. I pulled my cart up to hers and I held up the tub. I was trying not to giggle but I couldn't help it, every time I looked at the label I started to laugh. She just gave me a WTF look.
And then while I held up the tub to her, I said something very similar to (but I messed it up a little) the very ending of THIS:
I did the English accent and everything.
And good for her because she actually laughed.
I really wanted to buy that little tub. But I didn't. I bought the real butter instead. Even though what was in the tub might have actually been butter.
Butter in a cunning disguise.
